The veggies in the garden are growing very well. We have harvested one yield of Bok Choi and the 2nd round is blooming -- we are letting it flower so we can collect the seed and are feeding the local honeybees in the process. We have potatoes in 2 of the wine barrels, and LOTS of tomatoes. Plus some bunching onions, a few strawberries, beans just starting to flower and produce beans, cilantro, and kale (2nd cutting). We also have raspberries and fig trees in the barrels.
And we just put out the rest of the barrels (so now we have a total of 20 !) so soon we will be planting those with blueberries and other berries, as well as other plants.
We have also had 2 plant giveaways (mostly tomatoes, we started way too many) in the past month, and have met lots of gardeners in the process.

The El Cerrito Community Garden Network is now an official project of the non-profit organization Berkeley Partners for Parks. Our focus now is to form a Steering Committee, and start to do some serious fund raising in order to design and construct the community garden project in Fairmont Park.
In the garden, the plants are winding down for the year. In the native plant box, the main bloomer, which attracts a large variety of insects, is the Rosy Red Yarrow (Achillea millefolium var. rubra), a native of the California Channel Islands. In the herb box, I cut back the Angelica and the nasturtiums (which have bloomed gracefully all summer). The thymes and sages are still doing well. The Pipestem Clematis (Clematis lasiantha) is climbing up both posts -- hopefully next spring it will bloom. It is a native from the Bay Area south to Baja, Mexico, extending west to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada
June 24, 2012:
Watering at the garden today: several ladybugs, including voracious larvae; several yellow faced bumble bees rolling around in the poppies; a hummingbird working the blooming sage that Martha Colburn donated to the garden. Lots of activity ! Clarkias are blooming nicely.
June 21, 2012:
Happy Solstice !The native box is blooming like crazy -- yellow lupine, poppies, clarkia, blue-eyed grass. Lots of bumble bees (mostly Yellow faced bumble bees) in the poppies, several ladybugs in various stages (larvae, newly emerged adults, more mature adults).
In the herb box, the nasturtiums are taking over a bit -- I keep trimming them back so they don't crowd everything out.
Here are some photos

While watering the garden today, I noticed two ladybug larvae, one in the herb box and one in the California native plants box. Here are a few ladybug web references:
- The Biogeography of the Convergent Ladybird Beetle (Hippodamia convergens) -- SF State
- Convergent lady beetle -- UC Agriculture and Natural Resources -- IPM Online (good photos of all stages)
The Dill and the Mustard are both starting to bolt (bloom). I think it will be worth letting them go to seed in order to collect the seeds and give them away to fellow gardeners.
The yellow lupine is starting to bloom -- the deer haven't found it yet. But they have found the Clarkia, although there are still going to be some blooms, even with the deer pruning.
