Chinese businessman Xia's two-year reign as Villa owner came to an end in 2018 with the club on the brink of financial ruin before current chiefs Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens stepped in.
During his tenure, Xia signed dozens of players and appointed two managers in Roberto Di Matteo and Bruce - but it ultimately ended in failure at Wembley.
Numerous stories have emerged from Xia's time at Villa Park, some of which are scarcely believable, and Wyness - who worked as the club's CEO over those two years - has revealed another in an interview with YouTube channel Jude's Journey.
With Villa 2-1 down at half-time to Sheffield Wednesday in 2018, Xia allegedly sent a text to Wyness ordering that Bruce substitute two of his players, one of whom is said to have been midfielder Glenn Whelan. Wyness claims Xia was willing to sack Bruce if his order wasn't carried out.
'At half-time he sent messages across from China that we had to tell Steve to take off two players and that if he didn't, he was going to get sacked,' Wyness said. 'I wasn't prepared to send that message. I knew it was wrong to interfere at that level, particularly when somebody is just watching a game on a TV in China.
'Whelan went on to score and we won 4-2 away at Sheffield Wednesday. Xia didn't really say much about that after the game or again. He didn't really interfere after that. I think that was a bit of a lesson for him.
'You have to leave professionals to handle it and if they don't handle it properly then they pay the ultimate price, but you have to give them all the support you can.'
Xia was supported by Wyness and sporting director Steve Round in decision-making after purchasing Villa from Randy Lerner in 2016. It was, however, Xia's choice to appoint Roberto Di Matteo as manager and his decision to fire him after defeat to Preston North End in Villa's 11th Championship match of the 2016/17 campaign.
Before that season began Xia oversaw an overhaul of the playing squad, with Villa spending close to £80million on the likes of Ross McCormack, Jonathan Kodjia, Albert Adomah etc.
'He always had the final say because it was supposedly his money that was being paid,' Wyness added. 'We had a small team between the manager, the sporting director and myself to make recommendations. But he always had the final say, which is right and proper because he's chairman and owner.
'He started more hands on that he ended up being, because I think he started to realise that he didn't quite know as much as he (thought he did). Many years of watching football on TV in China doesn't really qualify you to take the club forward. He started to realise that having football knowledge and people in the game was quite important.'

Ross Barkley cannot expect to walk back into Dean Smith's team when he returns action after injury, according to former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton.
